Back in New Zealand!

Posted by Chris in News

Just a short message to family and friends, we are back in NZ now. Getting back into things here and currently looking for work. I know I have been very, very slack with this website! (Lost interest a bit as I tend to use Facebook.com instead of this site)

Anyway please get in touch as we are now back and would love to hear from people.

Chris and Inma.

Prague is one of those places that had been on my list to visit while I’m here in Europe and a few months ago I finally got to see the place. And finally some months later I have gotten around to posting some photos from our last trip out of Spain to Prague in the Czech Republic. Very nice place to visit. (Recommend it while your in Europe) The locals were nice, not as nice as Holland and not so many understand english either. At least the hotel staff spoke english. Everywhere Czech is spoken of course and we didn’t understand a word of it. Seems like a difficult language. Great beer, what they say about Czech beer being one of the best is 100% true. Very nice and cheap too.

Anyway here are just some snaps from our visit. I hope everyone is well. We are going fine!

Weekend in Amsterdam

Posted by Chris in Travel

Last weekend we were lucky enough to get over to Amsterdam for 3 days. Just a 2 hour 10 minute flight from Valencia to Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a lovely city with nice architecture, canals though out the city, plenty of history and quite a few museums to look at. The weather wasn’t too bad. It did rain a bit on our last day there. We did the touristy things one does. A canal boat tour, the Vincent van Gogh museum, the main art museum of Amsterdam with many paintings of Rembrandt etc, Madam Tussauds wax museum and a general look around the city. And of course a walk through the interesting red light district.

Bikes are everywhere in Amsterdam!

Not much traffic in Amsterdam, because everyone there goes about there ways in bicycle. You have to be careful as a few times we were almost run down. The bikes seem to have the right of way over pedestrians. Next to the train station there is even a bike parking lot. With 10,000 or more bikes its crazy. And there all the old style bikes with only one gear normally.

More photos of Amsterdam are in the Photo Album.

Bulls to the Sea

Posted by Chris in News

Its festival time here again in Denia, Spain and one of the attractions during the time in Summer here is the “Bous a la Mar / Toros a la Mar” or Bulls to the sea. Today I went along for look and took a few snaps and recorded some video so you can see what its all about. To sum it up they run the bulls down the main street here and long into a small area by the port. Where later the locals try to entice the bulls to jump into the sea.

And no I didn’t run in front of the bulls or jump in the ring…I’m not mad!

Alinghi Successfully Defend the Americas Cup 5-2, Sadly Team New Zealand didn’t take the cup back home losing to Alinghi today 5-2…Nevermind, Second place is still good and something to be proud of. In Two years they will have another shot at the cup and with this years experience and lessons learnt I’m sure we will be back with a faster boat and more experienced team to challenge Alinghi Again.

Lets hope too the rule will be put in place that a teams crew members must be from that country. Example:

NZ92 New Zealand - Only NZ crew members.
AUS84 - Australia - Only AU crew members

That way we will have much improved odds :) haha

However I doubt that will happen, its all about money now….

Alinghi Successfully Defend the Americas Cup
Boo Hoo - We lost! ;( Next time Alinghi….next Time :D

Tomorrow is the first race of the America’s Cup regatta here in Spain. New Zealand up against Alinghi in the best of 5 wins.
I hope our guys can do it and win the cup 1 more time :)

Good luck New Zealand.
Team New Zealand, Next Up Alinghi
Not much is new here, Denia (Alicante) now is too darn hot for my liking. 35+ most days degrees and very humid…And at night it can still reach 30 degrees.

3-0 to Team New Zealand

Team New Zealand is doing well so far in the Louis Vuitton Cup final over here. Three up now over Luna Rossa. Lets hope they can win the next two races and go through to
challenge Alinghi for the cup.

Come on New Zealand!

3 UP VS Luna Rossa. Go Team NZ

Saturday we took the train from Gandia into Valencia to finally have a look at the America’s Cup Village at the port there. Last time I saw the port area there was a huge amount of construction and they were restoring some of the old run-down warehouses and port buildings. Of course now I can hardly even recognise the port. What a difference! Its looks great, Valencia really had to step up here and make the village something special and well its a lot better than i thought it would be. It spans out to be really quite large and there are some 32 bars, Concert Area, Area for children, Park areas, Beaches close by too and of course the challengers bases on the left and right sides.

I was lucky enough to see Team Zealand head out with both of there boats NZL 92, NZL 84 out for a practice run. Now Team New Zealand has a hard road ahead, Next week up against Luna Rossa. The Winner gets to go up against Alinghi for the cup.

Spanish Galleon Replica

Spanish GalleonRoute Taken by the Spanish GalleonSpanish Galleon - Onboard The Ship

A Spanish Galleon Replica moored at Denia, Spain.

Denia port had an unusual guest the other month. Not every day you see something like this. Here on a promotional trip for the Americas cup. A Replica Spanish Galleon from the 15th or 16th Century. This replica is of a similar galleon that sailed around the world back in 1588 I think i read. If you look at the photo of the map you’ll see that path the Galleon took. The boat was pretty authentic and had followed the same route around the world as the original boat did. But of course now with safety warning lights, power below deck, life rafts and GPS Navigation etc (all the safety gear they didn’t have back in the 16th century). The rudder was as per the original design, But the masks made of metal tubing. No diesel motor inside to be found!

The matt black paint job made the Galleon look great and certainly stand out against the fishing vessels and freighters around that part of the port. We were lucky enough to get on board and have a look around. Life must have been hard as hell on board one of these Galleon’s pack in the day. The boat was only at the port for a week before setting sail for Port Valencia.

And lastly heres a quick edited video I made of the Spanish Galleon.
