Trek to Del Gerro Tower
Posted by Chris in News
Today we set out for a trek to Torre del Gerro (the tower of Gerro) Its in the area known as Las Rotas. The coast of Denia. We followed the Torre del Gerro Route but first heading out towards the caves which were about 1 1/12 hours walk along the coast. It was pretty hard going, but well worth it in the views that were to be had there. The weather was amazing, hot and the sun beating down on us. Lucky we brought a big bottle of water,as it was really needed in that heat. We reached the end of the walk towards the caves, but we never made it into the caves itself. It was too difficult and I dont think we knew how to get there. So we walked all the way back (another hour or so) to make the step climb up to the Torre del Gerro / The tower. Since coming to denia its something I always wanted to check out in person. Its a Renaissance watchtower, which was a part of the coastal defensive system developed during the 16th and 17th centuries to defend the coast from Barbaresque pirates’ incursions. Apparently there were 2 more towers but no signs of them to be seen. The tower itself was in good condition, the wooden floors and ladders long since rotted away. I tired get inside the tower but it was too hard. We rested a bit then heading back down to the coast and car. All and all a great walk and good for the old legs!
I’ll have a complete set of photos from the trip up in the photo album soon.
